Library
California Middle School’s beautiful Library Media Center is the focus of learning for Cal’s students and staff. The goal of Cal’s library is to encourage students to become independent readers, learners, and researchers. To assist students with these goals, the library contains over 15,000 volumes, including reference materials, non-fiction, and the latest in current young adult fiction, as well as fourteen computer stations. We subscribe to twenty-five magazines and receive the Sacramento Bee and San Francisco Chronicle daily. Students use the library for pleasure reading, homework, and research. Students are supported with their classroom assignments by a full-time library media teacher and current reference materials. Students also benefit from the collaboration between their classroom teachers and the library media teacher in planning and implementing lessons.
Cal’s BEAR Club (BE an Accelerated Reader) encourages students to meet the middle school standard of independently reading one million words, outside of class time. Cal students also participate in the California Young Reader Medal (CYRM) program, which encourages recreational reading of popular literature. Each March, students vote for their favorite books from the current year nominees. Cal’s library is a warm, welcoming place for our students and staff to work and learn.
